Help Us #SaveThanksgiving!!
Thank you for visiting and welcome to SaveThanksgiving.net! Our number one goal is to remind people what Thanksgiving is supposed to be all about and take back the holiday, returning it to the proud tradition of spending time with friends and family.
The fourth Thursday of every November in the US should be celebrated as it was meant to be – as a day to give thanks for all of your respected blessings from the past year, no matter what religion, race, etc. you may be. It is a day for family, fun, and relaxation. It is NOT supposed to be a day for running out of the house to go shopping and leaving your family … we do that enough these days, don’t we? Do we really need an eight hour start on our Christmas / Hanukkah shopping? Can we just enjoy one day without endless distractions and having to run around one hundred miles a minute?
Why SaveThanksgiving.net was started
On Friday, November 15th, I was driving to work and a local radio station in the NY/NJ area started hinting at playing holiday music. This station is well-known in the area and annually plays holiday music 24/7 (minus commercials) leading up to the Christmas holiday. What I thought was just the DJ hinting that the music was coming in a few weeks – typically ‘Black Friday’ – when they cut to the music, I was astonished to hear a holiday song.
After shaking out the cobwebs, realizing that this truly was happening, and talking myself out of driving off the highway, I decided to start this idea/page. We are simply looking to take back Thanksgiving Day and remind people what the holiday is all about.
What are we looking to do with SaveThanksgiving.net
Across the site you will find various facts and figures on the holiday, but we want to make this interactive and for people that feel the same way! Sure, we could put up a new story each week on our own, but that isn’t what we want … we want to hear from you! Tell us your favorite Thanksgiving stories or memories! Maybe your story can inspire others or change one person’s mind about leaving the house the minute a retailer opens their doors on the holiday!
Therein lies one of the main goals for this site. If we can provide enough proof/content to just a handful of retailers, radio stations, etc. to change their ways and let Thanksgiving return to its family-oriented roots and not be overtaken by December holidays, this will all have felt “worth it”. If we can get a few retailers to say, “You know what, our employees deserve / have earned this time with their families – we aren’t opening our doors until Friday”, this will be worth it. If radio stations can agree to hold off on the holiday music for just a few more days and not completely overlook the Thanksgiving holiday, this will be worth it.
How you can help SaveThanksgiving.net
First, we would love for you to sign the petition form so that we have a place to aggregate the voices and show how strong this message is! After signing the petition, you will receive an email that, if you so choose, will allow you to pass along our message to your friends and family.
Second, and as mentioned above, we want this to be a place that inspires you and others, to remember all of the good that comes with the Thanksgiving holiday. We want to make the site an interactive place for storytelling and sharing. This can be used as a sounding board, a place of remembrance, and/or anything in between. Please feel free to visit the Thanksgiving Moments page and leave your stories or thoughts on the importance of saving Thanksgiving.
